Beautiful Provence
Provence and the Alpilles, a legendary destination
Provence in internationally famous for its landscapes, villages and sights. And in the heart of Provence rises the Alpilles range, like a mineral barrier, its limestone outcrops dotted with pine trees and broom. This is an area much loved by visitors. Its picturesque villages, its castles, its Roman remains, its wine, its olive oil and its gastronomy all speak of gentle living, beauty, culture and enjoyment. This is the Provence so many artists loved and portrayed in their paintings, writings and music. How could we not love it? How could we not want to share it with you?
The Mas de l'Amarine is ideally located to put a wide range of discoveries within your reach, from the famous village of Saint-Rémy-de-Provence just nearby and the sights of the Alpilles hills to the farthest reaches of Provence.
In the neighbourhood
The Alpilles area has a quite magical way of combining the down-to-earth and authentic with the elegant and refined. Traditional festivities celebrate local produce, bullfight games, folk traditions and the trades of olden days. In December, each village holds a Christmas market for the quintessentially Provençal 'big supper' with its veillée ceremony and 13 desserts. Enjoying good food is a serious business here! Seated outside a restaurant in the plane trees' shade, discovering a chef's special dish, visiting wine cellars and oil mills: gourmets, epicureans and foodies will be spoilt for choice. Sources of great local pride are the Vallée-des-Baux PDO olive oils, and our wines, with France's foremost organic appellation in terms of its number of wine estates.
The Provence of the Alpilles is also an ode to nature. Whatever your tastes and your level, there are footpaths and VTT trails, horse riding and a rock climbing site. The scents of pine woods and garrigue, the chirping of cicadas and the sound of the wind, the silence of the small hours or sunset: pure poetry.
This is also a land steeped in history. It has preserved its historic buildings, from small chapels to imposing abbeys, towers and castles whose majestic ruins stand out against the azure sky. Different civilisations have passed through, and there are some major Roman sites.
A little further out
Think of a circle with the Mas de l'Amarine, your home base, at its centre. Heading north you can discover Avignon and its festival or its papal palace, or visit Châteauneuf-du-Pape for its wine. Heading east you'll come upon the Roman remains of Nîmes and the Pont du Gard, and medieval villages like Uzès; or head into the Camargue, passing through many-faceted Arles. To the west are Mont Ventoux, the Luberon, the ochre quarries and, further along, Mont Sainte-Victoire and Aix-en-Provence. Or you might boldly head south to Marseille and its museums, islands, fishing harbours and rocky creeks.
Whichever way you go, at l'Amarine you'll find our guide with all our suggestions, advice and sketch maps to help you.
